After working in the computer industry and spending some years conducting research into cinema and digital media, I became convinced that the innovative qualities of videogames as participatory media required closer academic attention. As such I have spent most of my career championing the inclusion of games within the academy, and arguing for games as an art form, a role I continue as a Professor at Falmouth University. Alongside this, and my scholarly work on the Gothic, I also maintain, in various forms, a visual art practice. This blog comes out of enrolling on the MA Fine Art degree programme at Central Sr Martins. It is mainly a record of my reflections on the work that I have undertaken for the degree. After having written about folk horror in games and cinema as an academic, this blog will focus on folk horror as a focus for my art practice.
2S2 AR (doll house AR) & haptic work (desk)
04/10/22 Following on from the work that I have done to add an AR layer using Artivive to one of my paintings and the work that’s been done with the NSA artists, I’m working on a Doll’s house animation for the Sticks and Bones show at The Crypt, St Ives. This work alongside the work… Continue reading 2S2 AR (doll house AR) & haptic work (desk)
2S8 experimental figure
3 day course with Emily Ball focused on experimental figure work (21-23/9/22). Lots learned, and doors opened – felt like a freeing-up after a lot of tighter, preplanned painting and fiddly animation work. Learning to trust that something will come out of a life – on-the-fly way of working was perhaps the strongest sense of… Continue reading 2S8 experimental figure
2S2 Life Drawing
Kicking off a new season There’s a confidence that’s emerged in the work after the Emily Ball session in these drawings. I hope to keep up that level of exploration in life drawing. I’m really starting to enjoy using charcoal and feeling better about layering chalk. Getting somewhere: less detail, less stuff, more essence and… Continue reading 2S2 Life Drawing
2S7 Experiments in AR
Working towards integrating a digital component to my painting, I’ve been experimenting with using an animated AR overlay in relation to a painting. I’ve been making AR applications for museums for a long time, but in a team with programmers. And, as part of another funded research project, I wanted to explore and evaluate a… Continue reading 2S7 Experiments in AR

Through the lens of Folk Horror: Courbet’s late landscapes
Through the lens of Folk Horror: Courbet’s late landscapes Abstract This paper explores Jean-Désiré-Gustave Courbet’s late landscapes using Folk Horror tropes as an interpretational framework. Folk Horror is regarded as a subset of the horror genre and is therefore located within the terrain of contemporary popular culture; a concern with the otherness of the landscape,… Continue reading Through the lens of Folk Horror: Courbet’s late landscapes
2S6 plein-air to studio: The ob-pastoral
The aim of this sprint is to focus more on working on preparatory sketches and exploration, more heterogeneous in nature, I’m off work, so time to get out there and do some plein-air sketches, working in sketchbooks, and some figurative work around folk horror. Compositional experiments are on the agenda as well as layer management.… Continue reading 2S6 plein-air to studio: The ob-pastoral
2S5 Tonalism
The aim of this sprint is to explore what a more tonalist approach to paintings offers for my folk horror thematic. This sprint dovetails with the completion of work for 2S4. My decision to explore tonalism as a way forwards is based on what emerged from S24 – a need to build more atmosphere and… Continue reading 2S5 Tonalism
2S4 Developing on 360s
SB4 (started 29/06/22) continues with the 360-derived paintings as a core activity but I will also be exploring some other modes of engaging with the landscape. I’m building a body of 360-derived work that will go into a show ‘sticks and bones’ planned for St Ives’ Crypt gallery in November. A key point of learning… Continue reading 2S4 Developing on 360s
